Withdrawal delays: the hidden catch with easy access savings

Easy access should mean getting your money when you need it, but withdrawal delays are more common than you might expect. Knowing what to look for helps you stay in control of your savings.

Life doesn’t always give you notice. It's why easy access accounts feel like the smart choice — your money is ready, growing for the moment you need it. But what if some accounts make accessing your money harder than it should be?

Most of us hear ‘easy access’ and assume that means we can move money quickly, ready for when we need it. Your favourite band could suddenly announce a comeback tour, the flights to your dream destination might be lower than ever, or maybe the car’s failed its MOT right before a big weekend.

That’s why it’s important to have access to money when we need it, but some easy access savings accounts come with conditions that get in the way, and we tend to only notice them when we need to move money quickly.

The reality of some easy access accounts

Here at Spring, we took a closer look at easy access accounts to find out if they’re living up to their name. We commissioned research, conducted by Moneycomms in February 2026, to look at the top 30 easy access accounts, and we found that speed isn’t always a given:

  • Almost half (47%) set a cut-off time for same-day access — with some as early as 11am.
  • One in 5 (20%) require requests before 3pm, otherwise transfers happen the next working day.
  • Only three of the top 10 easy access providers offer same day Faster Payments, the remaining seven set cut-off times or only offer access to funds the next working day.

If you need to get to your funds fast, these delays and cut off times aren’t ideal. As Andrew Hagger, Personal Finance Expert at Moneycomms explains:

“Having to wait an extra business day to transfer funds to your current account isn't really acceptable in today’s hi-tech Open Banking world, which is supposedly there to make your life easier. It's a big plus being able to get a decent rate in an online savings account, but it's also essential that you have access to that cash whenever you need it.

The access problem is even greater over a weekend and/or when there's a bank holiday involved. The best easy access accounts will offer the combination of a great rate and real instant access via faster payments.”

Not so easy access: delays accessing your money

Delayed transfers aren’t just inconvenient; they can have real consequences. Say you withdrew funds on a Friday, if you banked with one of the top easy saver accounts, there’s a strong chance that you wouldn’t be able to access your money until the following week. That isn’t so easy access when you’re faced with account restrictions. This withdrawal delay could cause you to miss moments you’d been saving for — that gig, the trip or the urgent repair — may have been and gone.

That’s why it’s important to know what to look for when you’re choosing an easy access savings account. When the definition of ‘easy access’ can be hard to pin down, keeping a checklist of questions might help you find the right account for you.

Make sure to ask:

  • Can I apply and see my transactions 24/7 in app?
  • Are there cut-off times for same-day withdrawals?
  • Are withdrawals limited to working days, or are weekend and bank holidays included.

True easy access - what we believe it should mean

We know that people want the best easy access savings account that suits their needs. Growing your savings in an account (or app) that gives you a better return is a no brainer, but we think true easy access shouldn’t make you wait to access what’s yours to spend, without account restrictions affecting your flexibility.

For Spring, the ‘easy’ in easy access isn’t just a buzz word. By using Open Banking technology, the Spring app connects to your existing current account in seconds, meaning your transfers are seamless, and you can access your savings quickly — whenever you need to. No tricks, no limits, no fees. As Andrew Hagger shares in our recent guest blog, easy access isn’t always as easy as you’d expect.

Derek Sprawling, Managing Director at Spring adds:

“Too many people leave their savings with their current account provider just to keep money close at hand. But there’s no need to be tripped up by early cut‑off times or slow payment processes. You should be able to choose an easy access account with instant withdrawals, without compromising on your rate.”

It’s just easy

Smart saving is all about getting your money to work harder for you, and it’s no doubt that your interest rate matters. But, as we’ve discovered, there’s more to smart saving than just your rate. True easy access means you won’t just grow your money well; you’ll be able to use it in the very moment you need it. So, why not learn more about Spring’s Easy Saver today?
